Department Overview

The mission of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is to advance knowledge and the practice of teaching and learning. We address the educational needs of a rapidly changing global society in democratic and socially just ways. Our teaching and research are rooted in a variety of academic disciplines. We value innovation and build upon the strengths of cultural and linguistic diversity.

Alfonso Gonnella

Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Professional Development

Alfonso Gonnella focuses on developing curricula to meet the needs of today's students, coordinating professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators, and facilitating change through innovative programs. Mr. Gonnella's focus will be on implementing a true curriculum revision process in Rockaway Township that will support students in staff in their educational journey. He works closely with his department, but also with the outstanding building leadership within the district.

Vanessa Waxman

District Instructional Coach for Curriculum and Technology

Vanessa Waxman is a dynamic and accomplished educator with a wealth of experience in her 18 years of teaching. With a background in elementary education, special education, and instructional technology, she has a proven track record of delivering high-quality professional development and support in both teacher and student growth. Vanessa is an ISTE Certified Educator and Google Trainer and has a passion for finding creative solutions to complex problems. She is a natural leader with excellent communication skills and is known for her ability to build strong relationships with administration, colleagues, students, and parents. Vanessa is dedicated to delivering value to her craft and is committed to making a positive impact in the Rockaway Township School District.

Erinn Young

District Math Specialist

Erinn Young is the Math Specialist and Instructional Coach for the district providing instructional support to all teachers and students by mentoring, co-teaching, and modeling in classrooms.  She works closely with the math teachers to provide feedback for effective math instruction. She designs and delivers professional development sessions in one-to-one settings, small groups, or in school professional learning communities.  She aids in lesson and assessment development and the collection, management, and analysis of data to improve instruction.
